According to Wikipedia the heart shape we know as a symbol of romantic love dates to the 14th century.
How we ended up with a scalloped heart is anyone's guess, but the geometric shape does occur throughout nature in both flora and fauna. A common example: a three- or four-leaf clover.
Wherever our ancestors found inspiration to use this shape to depict the human heart, we have seen many hearts during the run up to Valentine's Day.
If you had not seen enough hearts, here are two: a wide textured ring, from which I sawed out a heart, and a bracelet with the sawed-out heart as a charm. Both are in sterling silver.
I ♥ them!
