Since becoming a mommy, creating jewelry has been challenging, not only because I'm on Jade-duty 24/7 but also because a whole new world of creativity has opened up. All of the sudden I find myself doing creative mommy stuff, leaving little time for jewelry!
With a cup of white flour, a cup of salt and 3/4 cup of water, I made salt dough. Jade imprinted her hand and foot on the dough. After a little time in the oven, the dough was dry enough to paint. Mixing white and red acrylics, I came up with this soft pink. Voilà! A pretty little keepsake to hang on the wall.
What little girl does not have a tutu? Sadly, I have no sewing skills despite having taken a sewing class and coming from generations of talented seamstresses. Lo and behold, the no-sew tutu. All you need is lots of tulle in the color of your choice and 1.75" satin ribbon. Voilà! The girl has her tutu.
I must thank fellow mama Kristen for the inspiration since she showed a bunch of us mamas how to make our own salve out of oils and beeswax. Stirring ingredients on the double boiler I concocted an olive oil/coconut oil/cocoa butter salve in the Altoid tin on the left. Whenever I rub some on Jade, I want to eat her up! The smell of cocoa is so delicious. On the right is a olive oil/jojoba oil/lavender oil concoction. Soothing. Ah...
But this mama is also creating jewelry! I made this sterling silver ring for Hannah, Jade's babysitter, who came with us to Tucson during the Gem Show last month. The iridescent speckles of this specially-selected opal shimmer in the light but are hard to capture in a photo.
I wonder what I'll create next?
